The abandoned San Domino Lighthouse, located in the Tremiti Archipelago, demonstrates a beacon of potential despite its state of disrepair. We felt challenged to convert it into an indulgent, five-star boutique hotel by creating an exclusive tourism experience, and a thoughtfully considered design sequence by embracing the Lighthouse’s heritage.
To promote five-star exclusivity, our planned design sequence tells a story, starting with the landscape and flowing to the interior. We decided to keep the original Trani stone façade, to maintain the rustic charm of the Lighthouse. We also restored the Lighthouse’s existing well and converted its water tank into a swimming pool in order to enhance the original feel and to utilise existing resource effectively.
The original lighthouse could be enjoyed by accessing the rooftop via a spiral staircase, where it meets the dining area that serves as a relaxation and observation space. Here, guests can bathe in the breathtaking views of the sea and the Archipelago. Removable canopies were added to the ground floor and rooftop to provide shade without obscuring the original façade. The addition of these shades enhances the outdoor space by giving it a serene, harmonious and modern look.
